DAY 226.1 | Happy Holidays!

Frank Kunert, Climbing Holidays (2017)

Working slowly and with methodical precision, Frank Kunert (born 1963) creates miniature stage settings which he then photographs with a large-format analog camera, producing magical images of “small worlds” that have been published in previous acclaimed volumes from Hatje Cantz such as Topsy-Turvy World (2008) and Wonderland (2013).

Kunert’s works exist between the poles of slapstick and metaphysics. His new book Lifestyle presents 23 miniatures of these philosophically based stories of everyday life.

Here, the ordinary quickly becomes absurd, tragedy veers into comedy and wit becomes ambiguous. (Amazon.com)

Kunert’s bizarre wonderlands relate stories of the depths of life and say something about people: 'They are the expression of our culture, our past, our present, and our future. The inner worlds of homes where invariably are reflections of social zeitgeist and contain much of what goes on inside and around us.

  1. The glass of wine above/next to the bed in "One Room Apartment" is a nice touch. And the "Place in the Sun" is not so far-fetched, seen situations almost as bad in Vancouver and London... developer wants to buy, long-time owner doesn't want to sell, so developer sets out to further ruin owner's life.

    1. Also a nice touch is the sign next to the lobby of the climbing hotel, advertising job vacancies for maids!
