DAY 228.1 | In due course, we'll have to hold Putin personally accountable for this carnage

Russian strikes hit targets across Ukraine,
at least 69 dead in Dnipro

DNIPRO/KYIV, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Russia unleashed a new wave of major attacks on Ukraine on Saturday, hitting energy infrastructure across the country and killing at least 69 people in a missile strike on a nine-storey apartment building in the city of Dnipro, officials said.

Rescue teams toiled through the night in freezing temperatures in the aftermath of the Dnipro attack, in east-central Ukraine, with local officials saying people were still alive underneath the massive pile of wreckage.

"They keep sending SMS-es," Mikhailo Lysenko, deputy mayor of Dnipro said in a social media video. "We stop our work now and then to keep silence and we hear people scream from underneath the rubble."

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of Zelenskiy's office, said 37 people had been rescued from the building and a total of 73 were injured. Zelenskiy said the second to ninth floors of the building's damaged section had collapsed.

"You [Russians] used to come to our city! We treated you as normal people, as relatives. What have you done to my son?" a woman, restrained by rescuers, shrieked in a video from the scene.

  1. Except, an advisor to the President of Ukraine was just forced to resign after saying that the rocket only hit this apartment building because it was intercepted by Ukrainian fire, a statement he has of course been forced to walk back.

And given the recent admissions of Merkel and Macron regarding the fraud of the Minsk Agreement, the real responsible parties for this war are the leaders of France, Germany, Ukraine and the United States, not Russia.

  2. Revisionism at best.

Macron, Merkel and Biden did NOT invade Russia. The French and the Germans once did, that is true. Napoleon fought his way to Moscow, where he was ultimately stopped by the sub-zero temperatures of the Russian Winter and the scorched-earth strategy used by the retreating Russians. Hitler invaded Russia in 1941 and his offensive ground to a standstill at Stalingrad in January 1942, his troops defeated by the same polar temperatures and the superior Russian manpower (or, should I say, cannon fodder). So, we've been down this road before and I can't recall French or German tanks crossing the Russian border of late. Therefore, I don't see where our alleged 'responsibility' fits in.

Putin DID invade Ukraine — while any lingering contention over the Minsk Agreement could have been solved peacefully — under the false and preposterous pretense of ridding Ukraine of its... Nazis! Whenever Putin refers to Nazis, he conveniently forgets to mention The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between Hitler and Stalin, which was abruptly terminated when German panzers crossed the Soviet border in June 1941.

NATO is a defensive organization, not an offensive one. Its members are currently rescuing a neighbouring country which is being illegally, pointlessly, brutally attacked by a rogue nation using its nuclear umbrella to carry out misdeeds on a scale unseen in Europe since the past century.

Aggression war is one of the core crimes in international criminal law, alongside crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Targeting and killing civilians is a war crime.

In due course, Putin and his gang will be tried for war crimes AND genocide (kidnapping +100,000 Ukrainian children and sending them to Russia is considered as a genocide under the Geneva Conventions), duly convicted and incarcerated until the end of their wretched lives. May it come quickly!

    1. European Jewish Congress Shocked and Appalled by Russian FM’s Holocaust Reference

(Wednesday, January 18th, 2023)– The European Jewish Congress has expressed its shock and concern following comments today by Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov comparing Western governments’ support for Ukraine to Hitler’s Final Solution which resulted in the murder of six million Jews in the Shoah.

Lavrov claimed on Wednesday that the United States had put together a coalition of European states to solve the “Russian question” in the same way that Hitler had organised a Final Solution for Europe’s Jews.

“We are shocked and appalled by this shameful comparison drawn by Minister Lavrov between the actions of a coalition of democratic countries and Hitler’s persecution and murder of six million Jews in the Shoah,” EJC President Ariel Muzicant said.

“This is Holocaust distortion at its most basic level and we call on Mr. Lavrov to unequivocally apologise and withdraw these comments,” he added.

Mr. Lavrov claimed the West is “waging war against our country with the same task: the “Final Solution” of the Russian question.

“This is not the first time the minister has used Holocaust equivalence and Hitler references,” Musicant pointed out. “This must stop. As we mark in the coming days International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the day that the Red Army liberated Auschwitz, the memory of Holocaust victims must never be used in such an appalling manner.” (EJC, Jan. 18, 2023)

  3. Sure, tell Libya and Afghanistan that NATO is a defensive organization. And if you want to talk about history, NATO was founded years before the Warsaw Pact was.

UNICEF says it has no evidence of Russia kidnapping Ukrainian children (and the number I saw that it was accused of kidnapping was 2,500, not 100,000).

Everything you wrote about aggressive war and war crimes has been committed by the US, the UK and France many times over the years, including quite recently. Russia, too, but far less than the world-spanning empires of the West.

Macron, Merkel, Obama, Trump and Biden laid the groundwork for this war by encouraging Ukraine to violate the Minsk Agreement and refuse to carry out what it had agreed to under Minsk II. And Biden is using it to break the European economies and governments to the will of the American ruling class. And to support the military-industrial complex, of course. You Europeans are fools for letting my rulers do this to you.

    1. The "Tu Quoque" rationale is absurd and cannot constitute a valid argument.

The number of children (the so-called orphans) abducted by the Russians is digitally documented (name, age, city, etc.) and provided by the Ukrainian and European Union authorities. The updated data is regularly transferred to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, so that cases can be built and charges brought against the perps in due time.
      I rest my case.
Let's leave it at that, and agree to disagree.

    2. UK offers backing for special tribunal on Russian war crimes

The British government accepted Ukraine's invitation to join an international group that is working to create a mechanism to ensure the accountability of Russian officials involved in war crimes against Ukraine, and also called on the G7 countries leaders to pitch in.

"Russia’s war crimes must not go unpunished,” UK foreign secretary James Cleverly said.

“That is why Britain has accepted Ukraine’s invitation to join this coalition bringing our legal expertise to the table to explore options to ensure Russia’s leaders are held to account.”

However, some UK lawyers fear that the creation of a special tribunal may undermine the credibility of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, so they have resisted such a proposal.

At the same time, Ukraine’s proposal has the backing of former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown, the newspaper writes. The UK is ready to consider a "hybrid" tribunal establishment as some kind of a “specialized court integrated into Ukrainian justice system with international elements.”

On Jan. 19, the European Parliament approved the resolution on the establishment of a tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine with 472 in favor, 19 noes, and 33 abstentions. (Source: The New Voice of Ukraine, January 21, 2023)

    3. The actual number of abducted children by the Russians is +/- 10,000, NOT 100,000. That was a typo, didn't realize my mistake until today. My apologies.
