DAY 310.1 | ‘Let them eat cake!’

"Marie-Antoinette’s last-ditch effort to save her head: “I said, ‘Let them eat cake* and ice cream!’"

"So cries a moribund Marie-Antoinette as she climbs the final step to the guillotine in a satirical The Far Side cartoon by illustrator Gary Larson. Marie-Antoinette, of course, never said, “Let them eat cake,” but then she didn’t do a lot of things that were alleged by the Parisian rumor mill in the years from 1789 to her execution in 1793. Yet it was these very rumors that ultimately led to her death..." — James McCammon
